MOVIE 43 is a collection of twelve gross out shorts with an all- star cast. That's all. There's nothing more to it. It's just outrageous gross out humor with some of the biggest stars in Hollywood.
I feel like I should have hated this movie. It's something that doesn't belong on the big screen. These shorts are something that would be seen on College Humor or Funny or Die. The only real reason why this made it to theaters is because it has the biggest all-star cast ever seen. With that being said, while it's far from being good, I actually found myself chuckling from time to time.
Comedy is one of the hardest things to review because what one person thinks is funny, another person doesn't. So the way that people will like this film is if they enjoy this type of outrageous humor. If you find fart jokes, poop jokes, piss jokes, sex jokes, race jokes, and gay jokes funny, you'll probably love this.
The jokes, for the most part, are dumb and take no thought whatsoever to laugh at. Once in a while, I'd chuckle at one of these jokes or laugh out loud regretfully at some others. That, however, was too few and far between. There are actually entire shorts that fall completely flat and offer no laughs. One segment that parodies Apple products such as the iPod and iPad is a one-joke short that completely falls flat and goes on for way too long. The same can be said about both the Middleschool Date and Beezel segments.
Most of the shorts here do offer up a couple of decent chuckles or laughs, but they weren't enough to lift the movie up beyond just a generic YouTube skit. Some of them had potential to be very funny like the Truth or Dare segment, the Veronica segment, and the Proposition segment. The problem is that none of them had nearly enough laughs and had probably 2 or 3 good laughs in 5-6 minutes that doesn't make it feel justified.
Even the main storyline that plays throughout the course of the film has very few laughs in it, yet it takes up about 25-30 minutes of the film. Sure it offers up a couple good laughs, but like I mentioned before, it's not enough to justify going to the movie theater to see it all. At most, some of these scenes would be best seen on YouTube.
My biggest problem regarding MOVIE 43 is that most of these jokes would not have been funny had it not been from an all-star cast. Seeing actors such as Hugh Jackman, Liev Schreiber, Gerard Butler, Naomi Watts, Chris Pratt, Emma Stone, Jason Sudeikis, Halle Berry, Stephen Merchant, and Terrence Howard say and do outrageous and raunchy things is part of the joke in the whole film. Take that away, and this movie really offers up nothing.
That being said, I gotta admit that I did find myself enjoying a couple of the segments. One small short commercial parody regarding machines actually had one of the funniest lines in the entire 90-minute run time. The short with Hugh Jackman and Kate Winslet honestly made me laugh. Liev Schreiber does have a few funny lines during his segment. The Super Hero Speed Dating segment offered up a lot of laughs. Terrence Howard's segment would have been funnier had I not heard the funniest lines in the trailers. So I do have to give the film credit for making me laugh in those scenes.
That being said, MOVIE 43 is not a good film by any means. It offers up some good laughs, but they are too few and far between. There are parts throughout the film where I found myself bored wanting to move on to the next funny segment. It's a bad movie for sure. Does it deserve to get worse reviews than A Haunted House? Depending on how much you laughed during the trailers of this movie, that should be the deciding factor on if you should see it or not.
